Swiss disappointment

This was the beginning of a trip around the world I made with my brother and some friends, as we needed a lot of seats (5 for the first leg and then 7 as some of the joined later).

Im not going to review all the legs as some products are just meeh (I see you Avianca!), but it was def filled with a lot!, some good, some bad, some great and some once in a lifetime flights.

Itinerary for our RTW trip

I usually book close to date, 14 days to a month before travel, we needed to make our way to Delhi as we were catching a flight to Singapore from there (more of this story in an upcoming post), by then, there was a good amex transfer bonus of 20% to aeroplan, so I decided to jump and book whatever got me to Delhi lie-flatted

75k points per seat in J class per person with the transfer bonus.

I wasn’t too excited with this option, but it was a decent itinerary, having never flown Swiss it was a good opportunity to try the product, even though both legs where on the dreaded-much-need-for-retrofitting A330s.

I decided to pull the trigger and transfer 75k amex points to aeroplan and got 90k with the bonus to book this itinerary. good thing was that swiss tends to release a good amount of availability to partners for close dates so I managed to found 4 seats.

Swiss A330 seatmap Aerolopa

watching the seatmap I was baffled, like wth was I seen, the row on the left was a 1-2-1, the middle row was 2-2-2 and the row on the right was 1-1-1, I guess the narrow fuselage made the airlines get creative with their configuration, having booked 2 weeks before departure availability wasn’t great, but as we were traveling in group we decided to pick the middle row to hangout and catch some sleep.

Business class seats A330 Swiss

First impression were not great, the seat was small, entertainment system old, zero privacy and a really mediocre hard product, but hey, we were flying lie-flat half around the world.

like, look at the size of those screens, my iPad is way bigger and has way better resolution, the cabin feels cramped, there’s not much storage, its an overall old plane, and its showing its age.

ZRH airport

I Love a good old separate jet bridge, the first one was for business and first (tried to upgrade to first on both legs but the first one was too expensive and the other one the personnel of LX in ZRH didn’t even want to try as they said it couldn’t be made due to our partnership booking (made via aeroplan).

After 7 hours and a quick layover at ZRH airport we were boarding our second leg to Delhi, same old plane, same 7h flight time, I managed to get some sleep but nothing great so I was feeling it already.

If you have the opportunity to pick of the “throne” seats go for it, I think the experience changes drastically as you’d get a lot of privacy, more storage room and direct isle access.

Business class with the boys.

On the second leg we skip dinner service (not great honestly) and went to sleep, as you can see we were all down.

Delhi Airport

Finally made it to Delhi, which was a good surprise of an airport, organized and efficient, we were clearing customs and immigration in a heartbeat and were on our way in less than half and hour.

At the end it was a cheap option so I’d take it again, but a lot to be desired from LX, thankfully they taken their first order of their A350s this year and the seats are a much needed improvement. but having any other options this would be in the bottom as it was really mediocre.

Our next flight was one of the best one I’ve ever taken and a dream come true for an aviation geek, so be attempt for the next entry.
